The Story of the Black and White Cookie
With more than a century-long tradition, Black and White cookies have as many stories as the city that birthed them. Their origin has been hotly debated, but one of the most popular is that they were created by an Austrian bakery in Upstate New York around the late 19th century. Sometimes called a Half-Moon, or Amerikaner, this iconic New York treat is one of the few deserts that have a ritual attached, but what that ritual is depends on who you ask. Black and Whites solved the conundrum of having to choose between vanilla and chocolate, but gave rise to another. Which side to eat first? Some eat the chocolate or vanilla first. Or, just the vanilla and then they give the chocolate to someone else. Some eat right down the middle, getting chocolate and vanilla at the same time.
Fun Fact
The black and white cookie is such a New York icon that it got a segment in the quintessential New York show, “Seinfeld.”
“If people would only look to the cookie, all our problems would be solved,” Jerry tells Elaine, musing that since black and white live so harmoniously on top of the classic cookie, perhaps people should “look to the cookie” to solve all of our problems.
